The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is taking actions to support emergency relief and in Haiti. The United Methodist relief agency is already making plans to send teams, material resources and funding to Haiti as soon as possible.
"UMCOR has always had a strong presence in Haiti," Tom Hazelwood, a UMOCR executive said. "With this tragedy, we'll just be redoubling our efforts, and we'll be calling on people across the country to help us."
The quake is believed to be the worst to hit the region in about 200 years, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed by two aftershocks, measuring 5.9 and 5.5 on the Richter scale.
At least 1.8 million people live in the area where the quake was most intense, a geophysicist with the USGS told The Wall Street Journal.
President Barack Obama said he was praying for the people of Haiti and the United States stands ready to assist them.
United Methodists have had a long-standing relationship with Haiti through the Methodist Church of Haiti. The strong ties between the Methodist Church of Haiti and The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) helped in facilitating the opening of the UMCOR Haiti field office in 2005. (UMNS 1-13)

Change and Choices will be apparent at the 2010 Session of the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference. Bishop Robert T. Hoshibata has announced that most events of the conference will be held at the Salem Conference Center, four blocks from Willamette University in downtown Salem. Current plans call for the conference to begin on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with all conference attendees present at the first Living the Connection plenary session. The conference will end with a celebration of worship on Sunday, June 13 following the last of the Living the Connection sessions that morning. Families and visitors from area congregations will once again be invited to join in this closing worship which, according to Bishop Hoshibata, “will start on time!”
The theme for Annual Conference 2010: Boldly Making Disciples of Jesus Christ: Embracing Change, not only speaks to the change of conference location, but the need for change in how our Annual Conference and Local Churches go about their business. Bishop Hoshibata shared that, “It picks up on statements made at Annual Conference in 2009 to the effect that: We cannot transform the world if we are not willing to transform ourselves.”
