Thoughts from Bonnie Parr Philipson
Dear Friends:
Recently I have had opportunity to meet with Lowell Greathouse, Minister of Discipleship at First UMC Portland, who will become the "Bishop's Assistant assigned to the Metropolitan District" on July 1, 2010. You as a district will indeed be blessed by Lowell's leadership. I have known Lowell for many years and I believe he has the gifts and skills to help the churches of the district better envision what it means for each one to be a healthy, vital congregation, and with God's help to move in that direction.
There is a new awareness among our conference leadership that the annual conference exists to strengthen and resource local churches, not the other way around. We want to make the changes necessary to do a better job of enlivening each congregation and helping them fulfill their purpose of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Deadline to register March 2, 2010. If you missed out, please keep the participants in your prayers as they serve the community.
Wesley's discipline included the idea that "works of mercy were as much means of grace as works of piety. Manifest love for your neighbor and God...works of mercy include not only what we give but what we say and do. Among works of mercy is assisting those who were in need." Dr Henry H. Knight III
Be part of a Day of Service March 13 by signing up to do some work at Portland-area agencies who need help. Offer your time and talents to help with tasks which wouldn't be accomplished without the help of volunteers.
For more information, read the brochure which is attached here--and contact the District office to sign up.

“GOD IS AN IMMIGRANT” WORKSHOP IN BEAVERTON
The Hispanic Ministry Training Institute is offering a four-hour workshop on the Bible and Comprehensive Immigration Reform at the Beaverton First UMC on Saturday, March 13, 1-5 p.m. The workshop is based on parts of the Module 3 Immigration Workshop “Immigrant Reality and the Mission of the Church” by Bishop Minerva Carcaño.
Led by Mira Conklin and Ron Whitlatch, the workshop will be participatory, informative, and fun. The primary objectives of the workshop are to enhance understanding of the Bible’s and Christian traditions teaching on immigrants and immigration; and to share effective ways to respond as people of faith for advocating for immigrants and comprehensive immigration reform. We will explore what we can do as Christians and local churches to work for justice for immigrants.
There is no cost for attending the workshop and it is open to all persons including those not associated with the United Methodist Church. For more information or to register, contact Ron Whitlatch at

When the first tremors of the earthquake in Haiti rocked that island nation, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) staff were already in country, strategizing how United Methodists could help improve the lives of the people there. Their work is a direct result of the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering, which supports the operating expenses of those who bring healing and help in our name. It makes it possible, when we respond to an emergency like Haiti, to know that 100% of our gift goes directly to where the suffering is happening.
Every year, but this year more than ever, I hope you’ll give your people the opportunity to join with the faithful across the church to support the One Great Hour of Sharing.
Call (888) 346-3862 today to order envelopes and other resources so your congregation can participate in this churchwide offering. They will be sent at no cost to your church! Find more at www.umcgiving.org/specialsundays |
